Title: Critical Political Economy II

Rationale including Aims:
The aim of the module is to build on the work covered in ECS4412 and to provide a more advanced and in depth understanding of the contribution that aspects of critical political economy can make to understanding of real world phenomena and the surrounding policy debates. The module will focus on particular topics such as: military spending and capitalism, deindustrialisation and structural change, conflict and inflation, labour and exploitation, crisis and the golden age of capitalism, technology, critical realism, quantitative Marxism, Europe and peripherality.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge: Students will gain an in depth knowledge of policy debates and real world economic problems and phenomena. They will understand these from the perspective of the different schools of though that make up critical political economy
Skills: Students will develop skills of critical evaluation and advanced understanding of political economy.
Teaching and learning strategies: Seminars with student presentations: 3 hours per week. Informal assessment of student presentations and essays.

Much of the reading will come from journal articles and there is no relevant textbook. Recommended background reading:
