These programmes provide an advanced and up-to-date training in economic theory and its applications and the specialist area chosen. They also offer a thorough grounding in research methods and methodology and "hands on" training in modern econometric analysis. Extensive use will be made of PC-based econometrics packages such as Microfit, SPSS, Stata and Limdep. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework and written exams at the end of each module and a supervised research dissertation. There are preparatory courses in mathematics and statistics at the beginning of the first term.

A dissertation allows students to exhibit the in-depth knowledge in their specialised area that they have gained throughout the taught part of the programme and to demonstrate the abilities of analysis and critical appraisal. A dissertation supervisor is allocated to provide support throughout the completion of this module.

The programmes are offered on a part time (24 months) and full time (12 months) basis, with part time students taking the core modules in their first year. Our commitment to providing the opportunity for students to study part time means that teaching is restricted to two days in the week during term: Tuesday and Thursday.
